The Most Complete List of Must-Have / Essential Baking Supplies for new bakers!

When I first started baking, I was always eager to attempt a new recipe. However, most of the time, I found I don’t have the necessary baking supplies! And other times, I found I bought some baking supplies that are not useful, and I never use them!

Don’t worry, my suffering is your benefit. I am here to show you the “Top 10 Baking supplies” that every new baker should have!

I will separate them into two categories “necessary supplies for new bakers” and “Additional baking supplies that can be purchased later“. In this article, I’ll mainly focus on the first one.

1. Don’t just go out and get anything!

1.1 If you have similar alternatives at home, use them instead.

If you already have screens, slicers, an egg mixer, measuring cups, and other items at home, the specifications may be slightly different. Beginners in baking, on the other hand, do not need to buy right away because basic desserts do not necessitate many utensils. You can save money by waiting until you are certain that you are truly interested in baking and that you will continue to bake, or that you will prepare a large number of desserts before purchasing a new one!

1.2 Some tools are exclusively used with certain types of desserts.

Consider purchasing disposable decorating bags, pie baking pans, baking stones, and so on if you are particularly eager to delve into one specific type of dessert. Otherwise, the purchase is inefficient; you should look for other options first! Use something you already have at home to help you finish the baking task.

1.3 Select the general specifications for the mold goods first.

If you want to make a cake, you should first prepare one or a set of round cake molds. In general, I think 6 and 8 inches are the most practical sizes! When we buy molds, we frequently notice some that are of a different size or shape and want to purchase them all. The most common sizes, however, are 6 and 8 inches.

1.4 Baking Gadgets for decorating

Many tools are commonly used for decoration, such as decorating nozzles, cake decorating stands, spatulas, and so on.  However, it is not necessary to decorate desserts exactly according to the recipe; even if we do not purchase decorating tools, we can use our creativity to decorate desserts. Arranging flowers or fruits, sprinkling with powdered sugar, and so on. So, if you believe your chances of using this decorative tool are small, hold off on purchasing it right away! Wait a little bit while you are exploring.

2. The top ten baking essentials for beginner bakers

2.1 Whisk

Good whisk is a must-have. The following are the most important aspects of my whisky selection:

1). Completely stainless steel so that it can be directly dried in an oven with residual temperature after cleaning, making it more durable.

2). The steel wire should be dense, not too thin, and suitable for baking.

3). The size is moderate, and the wire is flexible, so long-term holding will not cause hand fatigue.

2.2 Silicone spatula

A silicone spatula and a mixer are two must-haves for frequent use. There are numerous materials available, and I would prefer to choose a more heat-resistant silicone material that can also be used confidently when heating ingredients. More importantly, choose the “one-piece molding” shape! Seams should be avoided because they allow dirt to be concealed. It is suggested that you buy two to three spatulas, one of each size or all medium sizes!

2.3 Measuring cups, measuring spoons

We normally use measuring spoons designed exclusively for baking rather than an ordinary spoon at home to measure baking ingredients! I used to use a white plastic measuring spoon which has turned to yellow color after several uses. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend you to use a stainless-steel measuring spoon that can be washed easily after each use. Purchase a set of looped measuring spoons, clean the entire set after each use, and you will never lose one.

The following are the two main factors for selecting measuring spoons:

a. The material is safe;

b. The measurements are legible and will not fade.

2.4 Mixing bowls

The mixing bowl comes in two types of materials: stainless steel and glass. The glass mixing bowl is commonly used in baking classes. Beginners should invest in stainless steel mixing bowls. The ideal materials for kitchenware are stainless steel #304 and #316. Two steel mixing bowls, 20 and 24 cm in diameter are a reasonable number to have for home baking.

2.5 Sifter

The main purpose of the sifter is to remove impurities from the baking material, as well as to prevent powder clumping. Sifting can help make the product’s texture more consistent.  The higher the number of meshes, the finer the mesh, and the more dispersed the flour is.  Beginners can start with a fine sifter at home and then purchase a medium sifter later if they need to sift a specific ingredient (such as almond flour).

2.6 Electronic scales

There are a few things to consider before purchasing electronic scales:

a. The weighing unit of an electronic scale should be accurate to 0.1 grams, which is suitable for weighing little amounts of material.

b. The scale stand is not too small to be steady when a large mixing bowl is placed on it.

c. Because there will most likely be some flour dust during the baking activity, a display screen with a backlight function will enable clear eyesight even if it is covered in flour dust.

2.7 Oven Mitts

There are several different types of oven mitts available, but the most popular are the cotton mittens seen in most kitchens. It is known for its ease of removal, but the heat insulation effect is low, and it is not advised for use in baking.

Choose a silicone oven mitt, which can be made entirely of silicone or have a silicone coating on the outside. The mitten shape is easy to put on and off, the pure silicone mittens can also be effectively insulated from water, the inner layer is thicker with cotton materials which is very comfortable to wear; the most important thing is to find one that is extra-long, which can avoid the arm when the hand reaches into the oven.

Please keep an eye on our oven goods; we’re working hard to create a selection of durable and stylish oven mitts for you to choose from. I feel that through the products, we can communicate our love from the products to your home. 2.8 Electric mixer

A good electronic mixer is essential! It is extremely labor-saving, and it can make the product more uniform, increasing the likelihood of success! You can certainly beat the ingredient by hand, but you don’t want to go through the pain.  Trust me 😊

A stand mixer is great! However, I recommended a beginner to use a hand mixer first. Once you know you will love and continue to bake in a long run, then go get a stand mixer. The main reason here is the price difference.  However, if you don’t care about the money, go with the stand mixer. It’s great!

The price of a mixer varies greatly on the market, but there are just a few rules to remember:

a. The mixer is made of stainless steel.

b. There are at least five different speed levels to choose from. The greater the number, the better.

2.9 Baking sheets/Paper

When food is placed on baking paper, it does not cling or burn. The baking paper also aids in the preservation of the finished product’s color by decreasing grease stickiness. Because the baking paper is inexpensive per unit, I recommend it to beginners. Once you’ve decided to use it more often, you can upgrade to a more durable and environmentally friendly material, such as a heat-resistant non-stick baking sheet made of silicone or glass fiber. It’s reusable and very easy to clean!

2.10 Roller pin

Rolling pins are mostly used in the preparation of pies and breads. Straight line rolling pins and handled rolling pins are the two varieties available. A universal straight stick type rolling pin is recommended for beginners.

Each of the material qualities described below has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, and you can choose based on your personal preference:

MaterialsProCons
WoodenLightweight and feels good, environmentally friendly, safe, and easy to moldIt needs to be kept dry most of the times
Stainless steeleasy to clean, with a low temperature.Heavier, and ordinary style appearance
Siliconenot sticky, easy to cleanPricy than other types in general

After that, you can gradually purchase other baking utensils.

Depending on your needs, there are a wide variety of choices on the market for each of the below categories. I will prepare a separate page for this topic.

  1. Oven
  2. Various mold
  3. Oven thermometer

Happy baking!!
